Texas Bond Review Board bond election data, explained

BRB's public “Local Debt Bond Election Results” dataset on data.texas.gov: what its fields and result codes mean, the quirks to know, and why we print the result but never the votes.

When we last checked (Nov 7, 2026), BRB had last changed it on Nov 6, 2026.

Enter your ZIP, city or firm name to see the bonds voters approved within 75 miles since Nov 4, 2025, per BRB, and the public building projects registered there.

Texas only. Everything within 75 miles of your office. No account needed.

Where it is

The dataset holds “election data for local government Issuers, including cities, community college districts, counties, hospital districts, independent school districts, other special districts and water districts”. Its license is Public Domain. We read it for every weekly run, next to the public building projects registered with TDLR.

The fields we use

Bond Review Board fields and how bondpassed uses each
Field What it holds How we use it
governmentname The issuer's name, as typed. Matched to a school district (NCES), a Census city or a county. Never fuzzy-matched.
governmenttype ISD, CITY, COUNTY, WD (water district) and a few other district types. We read ISD, CITY and COUNTY rows. Water districts are left out on purpose.
county Free text. A district that spans counties lists them all. Checks the issuer match. A typo is fixed only from a reviewed table, and flagged.
electiondate The election day. Groups one ballot's propositions.
propnumber The proposition's letter or number. Shown as written (“Prop A”).
amount The dollar amount on the ballot. Shown exactly as listed. We never add a project budget to it.
purpose On rows through the May 2, 2026 election, a category (“Building”, “Other”, “Refund”). On the Nov 3, 2026 rows, the purpose as written. Shown when the row has no purpose description. A reviewed label decides whether it is building work.
purposedescription On rows through the May 2, 2026 election, the purpose as written (“Swimming Pool”). Empty on the Nov 3, 2026 rows. Shown as written next to the amount, in place of the category.
result Carried, Defeated, Cancelled, Pending, NR or blank. The only field that can make us say a bond carried.
votesfor, votesagainst Vote counts. Never printed (see below).

What each result code means

The result column is BRB's record of the outcome. Only “Carried” lets us say a bond carried.

Bond Review Board result codes and what bondpassed shows for each
Result What it says What we show
Carried Recorded as carried. “Carried (per the Texas Bond Review Board)”. In the list of bonds voters approved: “Approved by voters, per the Texas Bond Review Board”
Defeated Recorded as defeated. Left out of the feed.
Cancelled The election was cancelled. Left out of the feed.
Pending Listed as Pending. “listed as Pending by the Texas Bond Review Board (no official result yet)”
NR Another code in the column, on a few rows. Treated as no result: left out of the feed.
blank Not posted yet. A blank result does not mean the bond failed. “no official result yet” once election day has passed

Quirks to know

Vote counts can repeat another election's

Karnes City ISD's Nov 7, 2023 Prop A row has exactly the same votes for and against as its May 10, 2014 Prop 1 row. See both rows.

Purpose text is cut at 255 characters

BRB stores at most 255 characters of purpose text. Prop B of the issuer BRB types as “Northside ISDa” ends mid-phrase: “…and the retrofitting of bus”. We keep the text as BRB has it and end it with “…”. See the longest purposes.

On older rows, purpose is a category

Through the May 2, 2026 election, the purpose column holds a category (“Building”, “Other”, “Refund”) and the words are in purposedescription. Dallas ISD's May 2, 2026 Prop D reads “Other” as its purpose and “Swimming Pool” as its description, so we show “Swimming Pool”. On the Nov 3, 2026 rows the words are in purpose and the description is empty. See the Prop D row, or every May 2, 2026 row by purpose.

Updates are irregular

The metadata says “Daily”, but the rows change irregularly, and BRB doesn't say when an election's results will arrive. A blank result means not posted yet, not failed.

Names and counties are free text

The issuer and county fields are free text. We match each issuer through a reviewed table first, then an exact name and county check, and never by a fuzzy match. A row we can't match stays out of the feed.

Why we print the result and never the votes

A repeated vote count looks like any other number, and nothing in the row says it is wrong. The result column is BRB's own record of the outcome, so it is the only field we use to say a bond carried, and only when it reads “Carried”.

Before BRB posts a result, county election-night counts are unofficial. We read them for Harris, Tarrant, Bexar and Comal counties only, and only to remove a proposition that lost there, never to say one passed. Counties and districts canvass between Nov 6 and Nov 17, 2026; results are official after the canvass (Tex. Elec. Code §67.003).

How bondpassed uses it

  • We read school-district, city and county rows. Water districts are left out on purpose.
  • A reviewed label decides whether a proposition is for buildings. Propositions for refinancing, technology or buses alone are left out.
  • Each bond shows the issuer, each building proposition's amount and purpose as written, its result status and a link to its BRB row.
  • Bonds voters approved lead every list: each school-district, city and county bond with a building proposition BRB lists as Carried, from elections since Nov 4, 2025 (99 statewide in this week's run: 60 from the May 2, 2026 election and 39 from Nov 4, 2025), within 75 miles of your office, newest election first. Only the propositions BRB lists as Carried are shown, each with the words from purposedescription when the row has them.
  • For a school district whose TABS history we have read, the bond also names the design firm on its recent TABS registrations, with each record number.

Questions

What is the Texas Bond Review Board's bond election data?

A public dataset on data.texas.gov, "Local Debt Bond Election Results", with "election data for local government Issuers, including cities, community college districts, counties, hospital districts, independent school districts, other special districts and water districts". Its license is Public Domain.

What does a blank result mean?

That BRB hasn't posted a result for that row yet. A blank result does not mean the bond failed.

Can I use the vote counts?

We don't. They can repeat another election's numbers exactly: Karnes City ISD's Nov 7, 2023 Prop A row has the same votes for and against as its May 10, 2014 Prop 1 row. We print only the result.

How often does the Bond Review Board update it?

Its metadata says "Daily", but the rows change irregularly. We read it for every weekly run and show the date we last checked.

When is a Texas bond election result official?

After the local canvass. For the Nov 3, 2026 election, counties and districts canvass between Nov 6 and Nov 17, 2026; results are official after the canvass. BRB's dataset shows a result only once BRB lists it, and it doesn't say when that will be.
